Understanding What Remains
with Jesse Lincoln, Plant Ecologist, Michigan Natural Features Inventory
Wednesday, March 26, 6:30 pm at Portage District Library
Southern Michigan is rapidly developing and there are numerous conservation challenges. Despite the enormous loss of natural cover, there are several important areas that still need protection and stewardship. This talk will cover some of our remaining natural areas with a focus on the natural communities Gourdneck State Game Area. From physiography and historic land cover to invasive species, rare plants, and the challenges of fragmentation, this presentation will dive into prioritizing conservation actions in our modern landscape.
Jesse Lincoln is a Plant Ecologist for Michigan Natural Features Inventory. In this role, he conducts thorough vegetation surveys on various public lands to identify important natural areas, document populations of rare plants, and integrate these elements into wildlife management plans. Identifying remnants of high-quality natural areas is a critical component of conservation and helps to prioritize restoration actions. He has spent several seasons surveying natural communities across Michigan with a recent focus on recoverable, fire-dependent systems and the management of state game areas across southern Michigan.
